Flame and Clouds: Turning Elements of Nature into Wearable Shapes

Flame and Clouds: Turning Elements of Nature into Wearable Shapes

Nature is full of shapes no designer could invent from scratch: the flicker of a flame, the drift of a cloud, the curl of a wave. We look to these forms again and again when we design, and with Flame and Clouds, the idea was simple: to turn elements of nature into pieces you can wear.

Two of our bags, Flame and Clouds, come from opposite ends of the natural world. One is all heat and movement; the other is softness and calm. Here is how each began, and how we turned something you can't hold into something you can carry.

The Flame bag: energy in motion

Fire never holds still. It rises, flickers and changes shape every second, and that restless energy is what we wanted to capture.

The challenge was to freeze a moving thing into a solid object without losing its sense of motion. The Flame bag uses rising, tapering forms that draw the eye upward, so even standing still, the bag feels alive.

It is a bag for people who like to make an entrance: bold, warm and impossible to ignore.

In a glossy, deep red, the body of the bag is wrapped in sweeping, swirling folds that curl around it like flames caught mid-flicker. The handle is a band of sculpted flames, licking upward from both sides and meeting overhead, joined to the bag with polished gold rings.

The Clouds bag: softness you can carry

Where Flame is about energy, Clouds is about calm. We wanted to capture the feeling of looking up at a quiet sky: soft, rounded and light.

Clouds have no hard edges, so this design is built from gentle curves and soft, curling swirls. The irony is that a cloud is weightless and a bag has to be strong. Making something feel airy while still holding your essentials was the heart of this design.

It is a bag for slower days and softer moods, a small piece of sky to take with you.

Finished in a pearly ivory with a soft sheen, the body rolls with layered cloud swirls that spiral into gentle curls. The handle echoes them with two scrolled cloud curls rising to meet in an arch, linked to the bag with gold rings, the same detail that ties it to the Flame bag.

From nature to 3D

Organic shapes are beautiful, but they are rarely simple to print. Turning a flame or a cloud into a bag means balancing three things:

  1. Keeping the feeling. We simplify the natural form just enough that it reads instantly, without becoming a cartoon of itself.
  2. Making it printable. Curves, overhangs and openings are adjusted so the printer can build them cleanly, layer by layer, in silk PLA, the material that gives both bags their smooth, glossy sheen.
  3. Making it work as a bag. The shape still has to hold your things, sit comfortably and carry weight through its handle day after day.

This is where 3D printing shines. Shapes like these would be very hard to cut and sew from fabric or leather, but a printer can build them exactly as designed.

Two opposites, one idea

Fire and cloud could not be more different: one burns, the other floats. Yet both bags share the same belief, that the natural world is the richest design library there is.
